    Northern Africa, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, between Egypt and Tunisia Coordinates : 25 00 N, 17 00 E

    Geography
    total area 1,759,540 sq km (1093327.5 mi)
    Slightly larger than Alaska
    total coastline 1,770 km (1099.8 mi)
    Capital - Tripoli

    Environment
    Mostly barren, flat plains with plateaus and depressions, more than 90% of the country is desert. Libya has Mediterranean coastline and a dry and extreme desert interior. It has hot, dry, dust-laden southern winds lasting one to four days in spring and fall causing dust storms, sandstorms. Environmentally it is facing desertification; very limited natural fresh water resources.

    The Mediterranean coastline and the Sharaha desert are the country’s most prominent natural features. They have several highlands but no mountain ranges except in the empty southern desert where the Tibesti Massif is 2,200 meters above sea level.

    Population - 5,765,563

    Role of women & men:
    Women are often under the veil. There has been a push toward female equality. men and women share daily social life.

    Ethnic groups - Today Libyans are mostly a mixture of Arabs and Berbers or Arabs and Turks. / The turkish minority is referred to as Kouloughlis.
    In 2011 there was estimated to be 60,000 Bangladesh, 30,000 Chinese, and 30,000 Filipinos in Libya as well.

    95% speak Arabic and 5% speak Berber

    Family life use to be very traditional. Now young couples tend to set up a new home on their own.

    Election of a General National Congress in July 2012 was Libya's first free national election in six decades.
